Thread: Radio upgrade suggestions....

    Radio upgrade suggestions....

I'm finishing up my 72 hot rod, and that liberation allows me to make a number of unoriginal changes....so no vintage Blaupunkt is needed. I would like to hear from those who have upgraded their radios to something more modern that still fits nicely without modification in the original radio opening. No door speakers, no amps...will be using a dual speaker in the dash that fits into the original 'single' speaker space. Thank you.

I have this Retro Sound unit in my 71 targa and love it. FM, Sirius satellite radio, dual USB, iPhone, and Bluetooth.

You can choose faceplate and knobs similar to vintage VW/PORSCHE items and the average person will have no idea it is a modern stereo. Can find it discounted at the major car audio sites sometimes too.

My friend has one of those RetroSound units in her '73.5 targa. Seems to be a reasonable choice.

I've found the best solution for me is keeping an original Frankfurt in the dash but adding a blue tooth connection. The power from the Frankfurt is more than enough to drive a single dash speaker and I have the ability to stream music from my phone or use the Frankfurt's am/fm tuner if I want to listen to the radio. It's a simple and cheap solution that can be installed in less than an hour. I've also found that the original style dash speaker sounds better than any of the dual speaker replacements I've tried.

I did one of these in a custom '57 Bel Air I built for my Dad. Works well but so ugly for our sparse German dashes.

I would agree. Keep old radio, & add bluetooth. Control from your phone pushing content to speaker via bluetooth. Most radio stations are available online or have an app.

Thank you all...original Frankfurt with all it's brackets, etc. sold at a very nice premium, and since it is a 'hot rod', I'm still happy with that decision...heck knows for every $10.00 I sold in 'used' parts, I spend $100.00 for everything I needed to complete this project. Will look at the RetroSound units recommended. Thanks again.

IF....I found a Frankfurt (at reasonable cost) and slipped a bluetooth connection with a switch like you've described in other threads, could a mic and separate amp be adapted into the mix for higher quality sound and hands free calls.. when the radio isn't in use
I know the aurora system can be integrated but that stuff gets silly pricy quick... With bilsteins to overhaul and tires to buy, having an aurora added to a stock radio just does not compute.

Could it be done? I suppose anything could be done. But not easily, that's for sure. There's a company out there that will take your original Frankfurt and install all new electronics on the inside. Let me see if I can find the link.

edit: Actually, it looks similar to the Aurora system you mentioned which I had never seen before.
