Ok I'm going to change my position :O Keep the 914 and buy the BMW that's a very nice car and hard to find that nice like your 914. Then when you can find a Boxster and add it.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.
Jeff, have you decided? If not, here's a few photos to persuade you.

I would prefer that your BMW was a 1972/73 2002tii with mechanical fuel injection like the one pictured instead of a 1968 with the unsafe lowback seats, and under powered engine, but that 1968 does look very good and will turn way more heads than any Boxster. As a person who both owns a 1972 BMW 2002tii and a 1972 Porsche 911S there is absolutely no comparison between the two cars performance wise (your 914 is probably closer), but the BMW does turn way more heads than the Porsche, BUT you can't really drive either car anywhere without worrying about something/anything happening to it.
Update on this thread.....I ended up purchasing an '08 987.1 base Cayman with 25K miles from a Porsche dealership in St. Louis. It's nicely equipped with a 5-speed manual, 18" S wheels, sport seats....it's an absolute blast to drive and the prices are a bargain right now. Thanks for all the advice from the members here.

I have a 2001 Boxster S so I am somewhat biased. If you love open air motoring on a summer day, the Boxster with its mid engine design handles like you wouldn't believe. The performance is more than adequate with its 3.2 liter engine and 250 HP. No comparison to the BMW. Totally different car. Having said that, I have always lusted after a 2002. It's a cult car which put BMW on the map in the U.S. and has many more vintage car qualities. In 1979 I debated buying a used 2002 or buying a new 320i. I bought the 320i and still have it (the forgotten 3 series).

One thing that‘s easy with the BMW is making ca 165 HP for little money. So lack of performance is relative easy to overcome.
If you aim for more until 180 is still reasonable above that it gets difficult (=expensive)
And congrats on the cayman - way better choice than a Boxster
