How is the '68 dash unique from the 65-67?

I am going to get my dash reupholstered. I know there will be a seam and that is OK for what this car will end up being. The speaker section also needs to be recovered but the board that is wrapped in vinyl is warped.

I understand that the '68 dash is supposed to be a one year only thing but am curious how it differs from the other 2 part dashes.

Is the speaker section the same on all of the early dashes? I'm thinking of just buying that section from lakewell or stoddard or someone. ...thought about making one too but I think it might be hard to punch out the speaker holes in the correct pattern and might be less of a hassle to simply order the part new.

    Thanks in advance ...again!

Jay, the speaker section on a 68 is a separate vinyl insert, easy to re-upholster and install with dash still in car. I may have one. Otherwise, unlike the 65-67 version, which is recovered in two parts and joined together (in a somewhat complicated way with tabs) with vinyl stretched over metal for both parts, the main dash on the 68 is of hard plastic material (injection molded?) and cannot be "re-upholstered" by stretching vinyl over it as you can with 65-67 dash.

Thanks John. I took the dash over to one of the local upholstery shops. She thought she could do the main dash but I think you are right, it will not be as original but for this car that should be OK. ...will be a bit of a rat-rod/hot rod car.

Shop had a larger concern was getting the speaker holes "right" The fiberboard or whatever that stuff is on my speaker section is also warped but that seems like something that could be duplicated without too much difficulty
. ...does someone sell a kit to reupholster the speaker section? ...maybe I should call autobahn?

Yeah, I'd just call Tony. He'll knock this out for you and it'll be perfect.
