Thread: The General's 1967 911

    The General's 1967 911

Bought in Culver City CA. by an US Army 2LT in 1967 and kept for 45 years until he retired as a Major General and then I assumed command of the 911 in 2012. Original rebuilt 901/06 goes back in tomorrow. Back when the military really had astute officers.

They still do, especially the West Point Grads.

I was referring to car purchases, not one single Porsche in the F16/F35 pilots parking lot at Luke AFB. I go there ever week and I maybe the one on base with one.

Cool 911. I took a ride in that car once. With previous engine. Congrats. Headed to AZ this week.

Probably no need or desire to 'pilot' a 911 after a day in an "F" aircraft

I think when a large number of US servicemen and women were posted in Europe in the 50's, 6-'s and 70's it was pretty common to bring back a Porsche or other German car when you returned home. The price was right and you could bring back personal effects with no duties or taxes. My dad bought a Mercedes 220 in 1970 while on sabbatical in Germany for $2400 and brought it back home to Honolulu. Even with the $200 in shipping it was way less than half the price of the same car stateside.

Two things happened since. Postings are now to places like Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait where people are much more immersed in combat and don't have time to car shop. Or cars to even shop for. And secondly, while in 1970 a Mercedes in Germany cost 10% of what my dad made at the time, in 2020 a similar car costs considerably more as a percentage of current salaries.

In short, I'm not too surprised you don't see new Porsches at an AFB parking lot, but I am a little surprised you don't see some older models.

Nice career trajectory from 2nd LT to Major General.

Love that he kept the 911 all that time. Looks wonderful.

    Hi Tate,

Lets drink beer, if you want to come out and stay at the ranch, I'll fire up the Treager.

Seems the new U.S. Air Force pilots go-to vehicle is a pickup truck. Believe me, I have nothing against trucks, actually I my love 1970 F-100, but it's not my daily driver.
