    Peter: I've checked and JYS birthday event at the clubhouse was June this year and his Matra was the car on display in the foyer t that time. Obviously by design not coincicidence. . So the one he showed HM the Queen. Widely reported in the national press as she doesn't often drop in to private citizen's birthday parties apparantly. Chances are it is a car you saw as a kid on your trip:
    This is what I've read about the particular display car: "Jackie Stewart won a total of six Grands Prix in 1969, five in the MS-80 and one in the Matra MS-10 (‘precursor’ to the MS-80). He enjoyed a prestigious victory at Silverstone with an epic battle against Jochen Rindt. And then at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Jackie led for many laps but only beat Rindt’s Lotus 49B to the flag by less than a car’s length; that victory, however, ensured his first world drivers’ championship, with three races of the season to spare. Driven by Sir Jackie Stewart (Knighted 2001) – Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion, 1969. 3-times World Drivers’ Champion, also 1971, 1973"

    Meanwhile in 1969 a young hopeful and future multiple world driver champion had moved to England from Brazil.     Fittipaldi's name first appears on the RAC gold cup in 1972 ( just out of shot) having taken up lead role following Rindt's death in 70.

    Too many RAC Rotunda cars to fully list the weekly changing display but couple more maybe of interest as other World Championship winning examples:

    Sir Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme BT24 had three wins vs Jim Clark’s 4 in the Lotus, but with strong placings the Brabham team won the Constructors’ Championship. Hulme the driver's championship.

    McLaren M23 between 1973 1978 and, during that time with Denny Hulme, Peter Revson, Jody Scheckter, Emerson Fittipaldi and Jochen Mass.Gilles Villeneuve also car that James Hunt had 6 Grands Prix victories during 1976.

    When younger he had been quite a promising tennis player entering junior Wimbledon-- coincidentally his final home was adjacent to the tournament location All England Tennis Club in London SW19

    The team work hard to bring us members this world class ever changing display. The grand old building dating from 1911 wasn't designed to display cars with historical or now high monetary value. Each is brought through the main reviving door entrance and up stairs using bedpoke ramps. Right in the heart of central London in the wee small hours. Video of an AC Cobra being put on display shows this process in action:

    Just popping in for a drink or use the gym and pool we never know what car will be there. Sometimes a car is there for just the day if an event for example when Jean Todt ex Ferrari and now came for a dinner a Schumacher Ferrari F1 car quickly appears appeared and then went just as quickly. Also quite amusing to see passers-by on the street do a double-take or backtrack having unexpectedly glimpsed some historic/ interesting car through the doors of an old building as they go from Trafalgar Square to St James Palace on the well trodden tourist route.

    PS The second Clubhouse and the club's famous RAC Tourist Trophy. Although his personal Osca is kept at the country club motorhouse and the restaurant there now bears his name Moss' home is very close to the central London clubhouse so he was more regularly seen there.

    Started in 1905, the club's TT is the world's oldest continuous motor race. Stirling won it the most with seven wins. These days there is a homage, (in addition to the real current RAC TT race which is now linked to FIA World Endurance Championship) the homage is called the RAC TT "Celebration" annually at Goodwood Revival attracting some interesting entrants every year. Also historic versions at Silverstone Classic.

    Thanks for the photos, Steve; I had forgotten the MS80 used the DFV... I was looking for 12 inlets, not 8!!!

    Also some of Gordon Murray's cars for when he was invited Brabham BT44B from 74 and his car as young man when still in South Africa.

    Both Newey and Murray mentioned the influence of Lotus.

    When I was at Hethel Chapman's son Clive often used the track to shakedowns various Classic Team Lotus. On one particular occasion remember a Senna JPS being driven by ex-racer turned TV pundit Martin Brundle. The wonderful noise bringing folks out of their offices trackside. It would've been rude not to! Before smartphone so no photographs but recall phoning a mate to let him listen in to cheer up his day. Easy to get caught up in day to day work even working for Lotus but things like that a reminder that the Hethel and Lotus were special and although unannounced the reaction showed the folks working there were enthusiasts. Also I arranged for a few early 911 friends to visit as my guest for factory tour and some fast laps with the Lotus test drivers -- some of those pals still lurk here and on DDK. If fact one mate I'm in regular contact with who attended as part of that group visit joined me at Club for a motoring event just a couple of weeks ago while another brought his long-term owned 69 911S to a Club drive-in as my guest. A couple of handfulls of us used to meet up every third Wednesday of the month in a Surrey pub in late eighties / early nineties -- long before DDK web forum / club took over the tradition and relocated to a Cobham venue. The late, much missed dear pal Chris Turner at the heart of these occasions all through the decades.

    Sadly Prince Bira who is featured as a driver was found dead and pennyless on a London Tube train many year later in the mid eighties.

    In rotunda Penske PC23 was designed by Nigel Bennett of Penske Cars Ltd in Poole, Dorset England where it was also built. Pc23 dominated the 1994 CART IndyCar with Al Unser Emerson Fittipaldi, and Paul Tracy.

    PC23 was usually powered by the Ilmor 265D quad-cam engine for but for Indianapolis it was fitted with 1024 bhp pushrod Mercedes 500i to exploit a loophole in the technical regulations for the Indy 500. The British designed Penske cars won 12 of the 16 races that season, with Unser Jr claiming the CART IndyCar season title ahead of Fittipaldi and Tracy in a Penske 1-2-3. The Indy 500 win, by Unser Jr, was collaborative effort of Roger Penske, Ilmor’s Mario Illien, and Paul Morgan
