    Trophies

The famous British Grand Prix Trophy owned by the RAC

Little is known of the origins of the gold trophy and despite much research, the Royal Automobile Club has never been able to establish where it came from. The only clue lies in the motto which displays, 'Floreat Etona' or 'let Eton Flourish', suggesting perhaps that it was donated to the Royal Automobile Club by Club Member the late Sir Charles Rolls, co-founder of the Rolls Royce Motor Company and former pupil of Eton College.

If that's the Matra that Jackie Stewart raced at Monaco in 1969, I got to see it real time. I was 9 years old and traveling with my Dad on an Autoweek tour.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos and the history that went with them. I have many fond memories of the 1960's.

Thanks for the photos, Steve; I had forgotten the MS80 used the DFV... I was looking for 12 inlets, not 8!!!
