Thread: Question on 901 (dog-leg) transmission

    Question on 901 (dog-leg) transmission

Is it normal that once every 6 or 7 times I put in 1st fear on a freshly restored 901 5-speed transmission, it will resist a bit? Going into second and getting things to rotate at the same speed will take the resistance away and make it easier to go in 1st.

I heard from some folks that “It is the nature of the 901 transmission”, but I’ve always driven a ‘69 with the 4-speed, so I wouldn’t know... appreciate any thoughts.

Do you know if the rebuild included a new 1st / reverse slider and synchro?

I am in the "it is the nature of the 901" camp.
Even well worn, rebuilt 1st is sometimes like that. I think it is Normal with the 901.

Have driven Fresh rebuild 901 and a 20 years rebuilt, same :
“It is the nature of the 901 transmission” and its "charm"
If it does not "grind", then it is ok I would say.

With my 1000 mile 901 I lightly blip the throttle to maybe 1500 rpm's to get a little rotation and it slips in to first with very little pressure.
