FS: Early Abarth momo 38cm steering wheel

My hobby of collecting steering wheels has slowly taking over a big part of my life and right now, i've reached the point of buying when i don't have the money. I know, that's bad... I've often been chatting with people who reached out to me, hunting for that specific momo, and since a year or 2, i've been saying it has become more of an addiction than a hobby. So i'm way past the denial phase but i'm not ready yet for being cured. My way of curing is selling something so i have money again to buy something else.

That way, i'm listing this slightly dished, 385mm Abarth here. I'm a momo guy mainly but i've always like the 3 spoke Abarth wheels with the tapered slots. Mostly because they remind me of the 911R wheel even though i know it is different in many aspects. But they just work on porsches, that's for sure.

This wheel is one of the very early ones and for those familiar with the earliest momo's, they may recognise the "12707" stamp on the rear of this wheel. This number is also found on the rear of the very first momo steering wheels, although in a slightly different configuration. Momo and Abarth, it's always been a thin line... Going forth by that, i'd say this wheel is period correct for an any early porsche and was most likely produced around mid 60s.

The good: this is a really rare wheel and doesn't have any signs of stress marks on the spokes which is quite common on wheels from this era. Especially for the larger diameter ones... Apart from that, no scratches, just a very well preserved piece. Large diameter obviously means a clear view on the gauges too.

The bad: even though no bent spokes, i always run the "flat surface test". That indicates this wheel does in fact lean a little forward on the top (see last pic). Most likely not noticeable once mounted but i rather mention every aspect in advance. What surprises me is that this wheel looks to have been rewrapped. Surprised because when i absorb the overall look and condition, i can't seem to understand why i might have needed new leather but, it did. It does look like a rpetty decent job, although i would have preferred straight stitching instead of cross stitching. As seen in an older for sale thread from Mark, cross stiching was also original although in white thread: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ghlight=abarth

If you are considering a large diameter, early steering wheel, give this one some thought. As far as rarity goes, i would put this on a similar stand with a 1st generation 380mm momo for sure. Looking for a smooth sale, "PENDING". That is for the wheel only, if anything else is needed, that will be a surplus. I've made pics with some leather porsche horns (and one with a BMW that i can provide as a porsche one too) but if you are looking for something else, just ask me. I've got solid 230 hubs and large crest horns too for example, but i'm not giving those away.

I'll be selling to the first to commit to buy as i would like an easy sale and i've had some bad experiences before with keeping stuff for people. Deal is done when a payment is sent.

    Thanks,
    Robin

Hi Rob, very nice wheel dont get me wrong but that leather grain is very unfortunate.

You mean the grain in particular or the fact that it has been recoverd? I was thinking that last may be the reason it didn't sell yet, which i could understand. I have one with Original leather too but i've sold those before and i would like to hold on to this one as long as possible.

I am barely familiar with steering wheels but what stands out to me about the leather is there appear to be two grains. The short parts covering the spokes look to have a pebbly grain while leather on the rest is more typical.

Oh, I don’t know about that. Would go well with a 68 Elephant interior.

Nice wheel! I think the leather look good and natural. And will also be nicer after use.
