    Porsche 911s 1971 strange numbers

    Hello boys
Can someone help me to help a friend who just bought 911S 1971 according the numbers.But.
The number on the front aluminium plate seems weird shape -like home made. Also the vin number on the body is between snow flakes star not between the Porsche stars as you can see on others 911.And thirdly the number behind the knee pad is not matching to anything?
So i wonder if anybody can decode this mystery?
    Thanks
    Ivan

The Knee pad number (body number) is not going to be the same as your VIN number. You can buy blank plates and stamp them so it's possible it was restamped.

in general, i think you are just fine.
and it is not really a mystery.

there are a lot of middle of trunk stamped VINs with the asterisk and not a star.

and the numbers do look odd on the aluminum plate.
they dont look like mine...but I found a few that are not like mine.
and they didnt have black rivets...but anyone that wanted to do a good repaint. would remove the plate.

mine above, non karmann, 1971, or should i say built late 1970.

my dash numbers don't match the other stampings. but I think it does match the wax pencil under the dash, near the gauges.

The lower dash frame # is the same as the VIN from 1965 through 1968. Then from 1969 it is known as the production #. This is a coded number that is useful for the body production shop; 1014056 would mean: (1) production body, (0) Porsche built coupe, (1) 1971, (4056) 4056 coupe body in 1971. Now, all coupes built by Porsche (not Karmann since they had their own digit (2)) would be built out of this pool of bodies: 911T, 911E & 911S. I can get information that can tie the production # to the VIN since it is in Porsche records. The stamped VIN looks normal to me. The change from star to asterisk occurred in 1971 in association with a change in the shape of the embossed area. It is also normal to have the black wash over the stamping. I am not certain of the VIN tag. The numbers look a bit taller than normal, but the badge looks to be correct patina.
I'd like to learn more about this car since I have been studying the anomaly in the VIN #'s.

AFAIK all three should match on early cars, later lower dash number was build # but I'm certainly no expert. I also could be wrong, but asterisks are on early cars, stars later. EDIT: What Dave said.

now the welded oil door, that one is a mystery!

    1. did they only have a 72 replacement fender to put on the car? (most logical)
    2. i dont think the car is a 72...because of the # under the radio
    3. inside the door...is there the hole for the pull knob?
    4. 72 oil doors are very cool....i would want to add one, not take it away. and 911R oil caps in that area are also very cool.
