    Steering Wheel Alternatives 67S

Completing a 67S restoration and find the 420mm steering wheel too large. Do not want to compromise ease of steering. I would appreciate recommendations to make the correct change. Thinking of a 911R style or whatever. I would also appreciate recommendations for a supplier. Thanks

Go with a leather, extended hub 380 and a puck; all Porsche and looks great in a 67S.

I added a 30mm hub extension to my 380mm steering wheel on my 67 today. I’m very happy with the results.

Reviving this old thread because I am looking to mount a '73 380mm steering wheel in my '68 SWB.

I heard that 69-73 steering columns differ from SWB steering columns and that the steering wheels and available spacers do not fit on the SWB.

Could anybody please enlighten me how they fitted a '73 380mm in their SWB? Thank you very much for your help!

All the 911 wheels up through 73 and all the 914 wheels (380mm) have the same splines and will fit your 67. I’m using a 914 wheel on my 67 912. I would suggest using an early 914 wheel with a flat hub. The hub is then identical in every way to the 911 hub. The model number will end in “10”. Later 914 wheels end in “11” and can be made to fit but aren’t identical to a 911 hub.

If you use a 914 wheel, you want to go through the trouble of adding the 1” spacer (it doesn’t just bolt on) to the hub so the rim of the wheel is spaced away from the dash pad. The stock 420 wheel has enough dish that a spacer wasn’t needed.

Pm or email me if you need any more info.

Mike's suggestions are spot on. I would add that you can fit any steering wheel designed for a 73 or earlier 911, 912 or 356B or 356C. The good news is that any steering wheel can be changed in less than 5 minutes (with the right tools and a bit of practice) and are truly non-invasive.

I can add one bit of info. At one point, I put a '66 factory wood steering wheel on my '73. Fit just fine. However, the splines did not line up exactly the same. So when I took off the 73 wheel, that was perfectly centered, and put on the '66, the wheel was just the slightest off. One spline either way was too much. So, the steering column needed to be adjusted just a bit for the steering wheel to be centered.

Or, put in an early Momo or Personal steering wheel. In my 67 I use a 1967 Momo Indy wood wheel in the 380mm size. I use a solid hub but have made a spacer to get the wheel further away from the dash.
I love the momo wheels, light, sporty and I think 3 spoke is better for positioning the hands.

Momo wheels are softer than the (heavy) original wheels but I don't think this is a problem while driving.
The early 380mm are expensive though, especially the leather wheels. I am actually now making a leather wheel from a 380mm momo Daytona.

I am not a fan of the original big, heavy iron steering wheels.

I am well sorted in the non-OEM-wheel department and just want to try a 380 wheel for a change!

I usually drive a 370 Abarth, 375 Monza or 380 Prototipo on a stock Momo hub with "Manuel's solid hub cloaking device" plus a 30mm spacer.
