    Window Frame Info

I posted some window frames earlier and have had many questions about application.

This only a guide and I don’t have VIN production dates - just relative types by model.
I’m lucky enough to have just about every iteration of Porsche 911/912 models at my disposal so I went and checked the progression of window frame changes.
This quick survey only relates to number and type of screws, material used and whether they have wedges.
Wedges refers to the wedge at the base of the rear inside of door frame.
This survey is for coupes only.

    Screws? Wedges? Material?

1964 produced 911 has brass frames with 2 widely spaced small screws on the top frame and 2 at the forward base of the vent window. Wedges and brass.

1965 produced 912 and 911 transitions from the 2 small screws to 3 larger screws at top of vent window sometime in early 1965. Wedges and brass.

1966-1967 have 3 screws at top mount of vent window but no wedge. Also brass construction.

1968 still has opening vent windows but now has 2 large screws narrowly spaced. Frames are made of aluminum and much lighter.

1969 and up have fixed vent windows and the narrowly spaced 2 screws introduced on the 68 aluminum frames. After 1973/74 looks like they started anodizing the aluminum to black shades.

Pic of 1969 up screws on fixed vent.

I will also take a look at the changes to the rear piece that screws to the back of the window frame.
Lots of little changes to keep track of.

Good description of the evolution of window frames. I think it should be noted that the wind deflector on the rear of the frame on 67 and earlier brass frames was a separate piece that was held on by 4 small machine screws. In the 68 Year model, when the frames became made out of aluminum, the deflector was part of the frame. Also the aluminum frames only have 2 fasteners to hold them in the door on the front edge. The brass ones have a longer front frame and use 3 fasteners. Also all the frames with the "wedges" have wedges on both the front and rear.

That’s what I was going to check next.
I need to see if the screws on the deflectors stayed the same up until the aluminum.

A follow up question, if i may:
Need to restore the shine of a 67 window frames. What material should be used? If it's brass, I'd use brasso, but the frames are silver color.

I think you’ll find that they’re chromed over the brass
