And yes, I get the notion of capitalism, and the money making reason for markets to trade - but wouldn't it help focus nations around the world on important things to stop talking about money as if it were the only asset worth having?

I'm not trying to get into a fight with anyone - I'm just genuinely interested in people's opinions...
I believe Stephen if the markets would shut down that would create more disruption in the business world as risk and uncertainty would increase. No hedging. No visibility into how other participants are thinking. Liquidity and loans would decrease etc. it’s not just about making money.

Liquidity, plain and simple, is the reason to keep markets open. As painful as the gyrations and paper losses for most, it is a necessity.

If you think about it, the entire point of the stimulus packages is the same thing. Numerous markets exist to grease the skids of the economy. Short term paper, overnight lending rates, Fed purchase of commercial assets like mortgage backed securities, etc.

Without liquidity, nothing moves forward. Darken one market, the market most individual investors think they understand, and you will do more damage

Fascinating market. Almost a perfect Fibonacci retracement of 38.2% which even my wife was expecting. And now Friday coming up. No sports to watch but the tape might be just as good.

    Is the world going mad?

I'm trying to sort out not WHY all of these seemingly "existential" (remember when only snobbish readers of Sartre and Camus used that word?) of events are occurring round the world - but IF they are "existential", does it just seem that way due to the worldwide reaction? Is it really a big deal from an historic point of view that we have so many major negative events happening at once? Or are we humans a little more hysterical than usual?

Is the information fire hose drowning us and our ability to absorb and process? Is the world changing too fast? Do we as mere humans lack the processing power required to digest information and make thoughtful decisions? Is the age of decadence upon us and are we really "The Decadent Society" (Douthat)?

No politics - F**K politics. Let's attain an almost mythic level of ideologically-free thinking here and speak directly to the gods.

    Cheers,

All too true. Pathetic really. I was in Dublin a few years ago having a pint of Guinness with a few locals and one said. “You know what one of the big problems in America is? You have something called instant gratification. But that isn’t the problem. The problem is that for many that’s too slow.”.

NZVW, your country is half the population of NYC. It's a bit easier to put 4.8 million people under lockdown than 335 million. I'll trust our experts, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Berx etc. to determine our country's best path forward. The reason we are #1 is because we are testing 100,000 people a day with a test that actually works, not the flawed WHO test. You seriously don't believe the numbers from China I hope.

I agree with some of your points. Dr Fauci (who your leader tried to gag) is a leader in his field. Yes we have a small population however we have universally isolated our whole country.

I do not believe or will recognise that your country is testing 100k people per day and in addition it was your countries CDC that began testing with equipment that they ( CDC) admit was FAULTY,

As for the China count,,, I do not feel they are accurate, but so is a lot of the data that the US Govt are giving their people via the CDC and the trumped up 'China Flu blame false game'

Stay safe and if possible be KIND to all.
