CDC is yesterdays news. Roche has been shipping 400,000 tests per week since March 16. A number of other private companies have tests available. FDA just approved a self administered test due out next week.

FDA Issues Emergency Authorization on Game-Changing 5-Minute COVID-19 Test

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted emergency-use authorization to the fastest available test for the detection of the coronavirus.
The test, created by Abbott Laboratories, can detect if someone has COVID-19 in five minutes, according to a media release from the company.
The Abbott ID NOW COVID-19 test runs on Abbott’s ID Now platform in a small, lightweight box, making it easy to carry to different locations for testing and to generate results in just a few minutes.

The test is conducted by taking a swab from the nose or back of the throat and then mixing it with a chemical solution to break open the virus to release its RNA, according to Bloomberg.
The sample is then placed into the ID Now system and it looks for pieces of the COVID-19 genome. The test produces negative results in 13 minutes and positive results in 5 minutes.

“This is really going to provide a tremendous opportunity for front-line caregivers, those having to diagnose a lot of infections, to close the gap with our testing,” Abbott’s vice president of research and development John Frels said.
“A clinic will be able to turn that result around quickly, while the patient is waiting.”

The technology has been granted emergency-use authorization by the FDA “for use by authorized laboratories and patient care settings,” according to the media release.
Although the tests can be set up anywhere, the company is working with the Trump administration to make sure the first tests are sent where they are needed the most.
“Through the incredible work of teams across Abbott, we expect to deliver 50,000 COVID-19 tests per day to healthcare professionals on the front lines, where testing capabilities are needed most,” rapid diagnostics senior vice president Chris Scoggins said. “Portable molecular testing expands the country’s capacity to get people answers faster.”


The company says it will begin supplying 50,000 ID NOW COVID-19 tests daily on April 1.

Well thats great news.

Abbott definitely know their game and have the ingenuity and company strength to help.

It upsets me somewhat that companies like Abbott were not approached earlier when this Covid-19 first appeared, ( perhaps muzzled by federal contract ??)

We all realise that this horse has bolted with NO bridle attached and we are in a "catchup" mode.

There was an article I read nearly a month ago by a germ guy and he said this,,,,
"Live and behave as if you have the Virus,, Keep others safe by acting as if you have it"

This silent killer needs us,, stomp it out by severing its transmission,, we do not need IT.

Yeah,, easier said than done and hence why we are all where we are now,,,, Scared ,, insular ,,, rather paranoid and confused as to where and when this may end.

I personally have given the USA via this forum a bit of 'jip' over the way this has been handled to date in the USA and I shan't apologise as errors have been made by nearly every country in the manner that each has approached this dilemma that now confronts us all.

I can only hope for there to be a little more compassion for those who contract this, their families who will need support whilst caring for loved ones and most importantly those that are putting themselves on the 'front line' in order to keep the rest of us safe.

We cannot give them a HUG or even shake their hands so......

The other tragic consequence is our Federal gov't got caught flatfooted while most of the rest of the world recognized the threat and moved quickly. The timeline is set by the virus. We will be living with it for a few years as it comes and goes with the seasonality of people bunching together (fall/winter) and decreasing during times of natural separation (out of the house) spring summer. For the most part, based on my reading and listening, we can expect the virus to peak in Ohio in Mid to late May, but that doesn't mean the virus is gone. The state expects the virus to come back in the Fall. To what extent? Who knows?

Be vigilent. Wash your hands. Stay home, yes the occassional group ride is necessary but keep your social distance and don't stop for food/drink/coffee, bring your own.

Peace to all and be safe. It's 68 degrees here today in NE Ohio. I'm going for a drive in my 89 911 for the first time this year.

More than caught flat footed. The federal government was actively denying that there was a problem. No worse than a flu. Group gatherings and rallies are fine. Will be zero shortly. Under control.
