Thread: primer?

    primer?

It appears to me that the blood orange werks cars used gray primer while the blood orange production cars used beige primer. Anyone else have a similar observation?

Primer vs. Sealer. If the car is to be sealed (as it should be over the final sanded primer), then Glasurit specifies white sealer for Tangerine. Based on my experience with Tangerine (blood orange), white will give the most "vibrant" in-your-face result, compared to primer or sealers that run to gray or beige. Remember, it is the color of the last coat of underlayment (whether unsealed primer or sealer) that will influence some paint's final hues. Tangerine (POR 018) is somewhat translucent when applied, so it is more susceptible to underlay tones than, for example, Gulf Blue (POR 315). I'm predicating these remarks on a three-coat base coat application, and point out these differences are very subtle, based on side-by-side comparisons of Tangerine cars in sunlight. But now to your question, I have no idea about differences in primers used in werks vs. production cars. Almost surely these early cars used different materials (enamels) than the modern materials (epoxy and urethane) we use today. Sorry if this was an unwanted discursive.

Werks cars would have used minimum paint and probably the lightest weight primer. Doubt they were that concerned with the final color.

My 70 911 used white primer and the color turned out perfect with that glow effect. I think grey primer will make the color look too dark or not right. Also if helps to use Glasurit paint as it has the pigments to make it look factory done. Chris
