Thread: Magnesium care (when Gibbs Brand is not available)

Magnesium care (if Gibbs Brand is not available)

In Europe Gibbs Brand has been Out Of Stock for years now.

    I just opened a 915 tranny for a full check-up.
I cleaned all parts in the parts cleaner.
I resealed the tranny after renewing all 5 synchro rings and 1 needle cage. Everything else was in very good condition after 230.000km.
While cleaning, I was carefull not to harm the protective layer Porsche applied on the magnesium in 1975.
In Europe we have no industrial DOW 7 or similar.
I would now like to clean/protect the tranny with Gibbs Brand and a layer of wax/tectyl.
    However, Gibbs is not available.

Any recommendations on alternatives for protecting magnesium parts?
Or do I need to try to get Gibbs shipped from USA?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hello,
I have seen your post... I got Gibbs Brand last year from Belgium, but I don't know about their stock.

Another idea for protecting magnesium could be Protewax form Fertan, for soem applications it worked well....

    Thanks!

That is strange. I contacted them in January 2019 and they had no stock and would alert me. I will try again.

Try LPS 3 corrosion inhibitor. It sprays on then solvents evaporate leaving a waxy film.

I’m in the UK and haven’t been able to get any Gibbs for over a year. When I asked my supplier, he said it wasn’t available from the distributor any more. He’s since taken it off his website. Does anyone know why we’re struggling to get it in Europe? Environment legislation or something?

I'm in the UK too and called everywhere in the UK to get some but to no avail. I ended up buying a gallon in the US when I was last there on a business trip. It is not in a spray can so I will have to pour it into a hand sprayer to use or rub it on.

Not Gibbs but this is what I have been thinking but haven't tried yet:

I haven't faund anything really in Europe anymore other than this.

I have really tried to find some mag treatment, mostly just to prep for paint (for mag wheels), but I assume this would offer some protection also. There isn't place here either offering mag chromating what I'd have needed for intake manifolds so I decided to Cerakote-coat them instead. (like fan and fan housing)

    Why not just use tektyl?

Tectyl sits on the surface and the 506 has an amber sticky film. The Gibbs soaks in, especially nicely into my American Racing magnesium torque thrust D’s. I find it’s just a really great thing for cleaning and protecting.
