Shipping challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic

For your consideration and planning purposes:

Please note that currently, it appears that Postal services are not getting packages out of some countries. Some have noted that packages are waiting to come out of Europe to the US and elsewhere by Postal services (they are stuck "over there). Apparently, the overseas Postal services are relying on various airlines (Delta, United, etc, etc) for these services like they always have, and flights are down 90% due to COVID-19.

Some are not having any issues of their packages getting to foreign countries by shipping by FedEx (they have their own planes).

    Thanks, ESR

I have recently experienced that, the International outbound is being slowed by US Customs per my local US Postal Service and Fed-Ex office.
Domestic shipping via the above, appears to be running a bit faster than normal.
My oldest son works for one of the major airlines. They are looking for anything to haul; mail, newspapers and freight to compensate for the loss of passenger loads.

I’ve done quite a lot of international shipping over the last several years with very few problems. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but Ive had a package bogged down in U.K. (Northern Ireland) for quite some time. Fingers crossed as it’s a valuable shipment.

Domestic shipments seem to be very erratic, some faster than usual, some slower.

Three shipments of N95 masks that some of my Chinese medical colleagues purchased and sent at their own expense as donations to Children's and University Hospitals here in Denver have been delayed for weeks. The issue is getting flights out of China, since pretty much all flights are cancelled as nobody is flying anywhere these days. One of these colleagues actually managed to get the shipment diverted from a small airport that now has zero flights by truck to Qingdao. It then made it to Beijing, was transferred to FedEx, cleared U.S. Customs, and now has been sitting there for a week waiting for a flight. I imagine that backup impacts all international supply chains that involve commercial flights.

I got a shipment from John G in New Zealand to Canada in a week... that's about the same time it took the location supermarket to deliver my groceries 2.4 km!!!

Trying to finish two restorations and both are running afoul of shipping or availability issues. Ordered a black-tip Hirschmann from Stoddard 6 weeks ago, no ETA provided, just apologies for delay.
Fortunately nearly everything else for my '67 S is done, including all the smalls that can really create delays. Hope to finish the car in a few weeks.

But a VW parts source I use in SoCal is simply not working... I get the need for safety, but it's a mail order shop. Seems like they could stay busy, it's not like USPS, UPS or FedEx are shuttered.

On the other hand, another VW source in Oregon is just fine, shipped a tranny for rebuild to them yesterday.

For the mail, air transport is the issue. Air Canada has removed the seats from 3 of its 777-300ERs and is using them as freighters now. My brother-in-law has piloted a few Shanghai and Frankfurt flights with these. Lots of cargo to move and not enough regularly scheduled service to move it. Even regionally, their affiliate Air Canada Jazz has converted 3 or 4 Dash8-400s to full cargo to deliver to smaller communities. UPS and Fed Ex use their own planes for the most part, and so aren't as affected. The slowdowns for them are more in customs processing I think. However, I'm not having major issues with anyone. I bought 5 or 6 things on eBay last Saturday and the first two packages came in today via USPS/Canada Post. And mail in Canada itself seems to be running reasonably well. A two day delivery from Ottawa took 3 days, but I'll cut them some slack.

My latest 000 was shipped from the Richmond, BC printing plant by truck instead of air (I'm guessing because of the lack of regular scheduled flights). It got here in 5 days anyways.

For all the other more serious issues going on in the world right now, can't really complain about delivery times.

cross-boarder shipping is still a challenge from Germany to certain countries (due to their Import regulations).

    for example:

shipping to US: priority/premium only, nealy two weeks
shipping to GB: not limited, pretty fast, 3 days
shipping to CAN: only letters and small boxes from 1.4.2020 till now

    .....
