    Best H1 Bulb

John (but open to everyone's opinion),

On your site you list the GE Megalight Ultra +120 as the best in class bulb. What is it about this bulb design that gives it this designation, and what makes it better than some of the other popular offerings like the ones shown here?

You also mention using the GE 55W bulb in the high and low position on H1 headlights, is that still your recommendation when using these type of H1 bulbs? Assuming one does not want to install a relay.

I’m friends with Daniel Stern and speak with him frequently. As I don’t have a laboratory for sophisticated testing of lighting equipment I’m very prone to listening seriously to his sophisticated knowledge. As far as I can tell all of his recommendations are based on scientific data. I doubt that he is infallible as the goal posts are constantly moving, but it’s OK with me to be in the 95 percentile. You have to commit at some point if you want to have an inventory. Beats putting halogen bulbs in reflector headlights.

    Cheers,

Change in Best-in-Class™️ H4 Halogen Bulb at AC Store

After some research it appears that Mr. Stern and I disagree on our choice of H4 halogen bulbs as a #1 pick. I’ve changed the offering at the AC Store to the Philips RacingVision Xtreme Vision H4 bulbs. Better, brighter, cheaper. The only negative I can see is that they have shorter lives than some bulbs but who cares at their low price?

Technology moves rapidly these days and it’s evident that classifying something as Best-in-Class™️ requires continuous research. Which is fortunately something I enjoy.

Great technical article for my fellow geeks on automotive LED headlights featuring my friend Daniel Stern:

“Why Most LED Headlight Upgrades Don't Really Work: An Expert Explains” ~ Jalopnik

JW Speaker 8700 Evo 2 still king of the hill according to Stern:

“The king daddy of automobile LED headlights is the JW Speaker 8700 Evolution-J3, which brings almost Star Trek-level technology to the old seven-inch round headlamp format.”

    Cheers,
