any tricks for removing rear wheel studs ?

not sure if this belongs here or in Technical.
car is a '66. my H&R spacer set requires replacement of the stock wheel studs. new studs are 70mm in length.
the factory manual shows Hans driving the hub out with a P297 and BF hammer. this didn't work for me. neither did substituting an air hammer for the BF type. by pulling the E-brake adjuster I can probably drive the old studs out with the hub in place but don't think there's enough room to get the new studs in. I'm not in the mood to pull the entire banana and press the hub out. any ideas ? sell these and switch to a Sparco type ?
    input appreciated.

This should work. Rent one at the local rental place.
