Thread: SSI on original muffler?

    SSI on original muffler?

    Hello

I have just gotten my 71 911T Targa back from the welder, so now it is mostly steel again:-). When starting up the cabin filled with very blue exhaust (had been standing for over a year), which gradually turned less blue. I am obviously getting exhaust from the heat exchangers into the cabin so I am afraid that the exchanger has rotted. My plan is therefore to install a set of SSI headers. I have a complete stainless steel sport system (incl muffler) from Dansk on a ´77 911S and while I love the sound I am a little afraid it might be too loud on the Targa which mostly will be used topless (the car - not me).

Do these SSI exchangers simply fit the original muffler and are there any sound changes to be expected?

Does anybody have a picture showing a car from behind with the stainless steel muffler mounted? On these old cars the muffler is quite visible from behind and I am not sure I want such a shining thing hanging out back there.

All that will probably go away after all the oil has burned off. Visual inspection will show if exchangers are rusted thru.

That is what I hoped for, but after the two last 2 hour blast there is still so much fumes that my wife asked me to change clothes. I have ordered the SSI headers, but need to find out what I do with the muffler. Stainless steel from SSI, sports muffler in steel from Dansk (probably less metallic sound) or original (which I think still should be serviceable).

Does anyone have a sound comparison?

Oil has run into the muffler, happens if the car has done a lot of miles & been left standing for a long period. It will go away afer a good drive. Std muffler is ok if not rusty, Danks polished s/steel looks much better. I like the sports muffler

The Dansk muffler doesn’t sound great though, for a little more you can get the Porsche Classic muffler which seems the best of the new, non-sport options.

Thank you for your tip, @frederik. Where did you get the Porsche Classic muffler? Is that the same as the one offered from Dansk/JP Group:

Or is it the Eisenmann classic muffler?

A warm sound would fit open top driving with a classic 911. But I will go for SSI heat exchangers to ensure that I never get exhaust in the cabin again.

It's available directly from Porsche Classic:

I think you can order it via your dealer. I ordered via my indy mechanic.

The Dansk and Eisenmann mufflers are definitely not the same. The Porsche Classic sounds much better than the Dansk mufflers, either stainless or steel. More melodic, darker, not as loud but with more soul. Can't comment on the Eisenmann muffler as I've never tried it. I have SSI heat exchangers as well -- the original steel ones apparently sound better but I'm not a fan of exhaust fumes in the cabin either.

Yes - I have seen the SCART video. It sounds good, but is simply too loud for open top motoring. I guess I will reuse my existing muffler, which does not look good, but is fully serviceable. I will give it a couple of rounds with exhaust paint. Do you think this is the original muffler, se pic?

I have the Porsche classic one and it is very good. I bought it from my Porsche dealer. I had it ceramic coated to help protect it.
