What exactly are the differences between the 1969 switch and the ones that seem to be currently available for 70-73? Has anyone put the 70-73 switches in the earlier cars? What compatibility issues arise with mounting or wiring. Someone must have tried this by now right?

I have one, PM me for details. Looks like 69 used the old square connectors 70 used the round connector.

Yours is a 68 and not at all compatible with a 69. 69 uses round connectors.
