Thread: Wheel Question

    Wheel Question

I am currently running 205-60-15 on flat 6 wheels with standard fenders on the front. Would I be able to run the same tire size on 7" Fuchs without modifications?

I take it your talking about your '71 or '72 in your signature...

Yes, I ran 205 x 60's on 7's in the front of my '73 for years.... As for any mods... I would have to say that my car had rolled front fender returns when I bought it... But the 60's had plenty of room...
BTW - Those are 215 x 60's on 8's in the rear of my RS flared car...

Pics from a long time ago...

Thanks Chuck. yes, this is for my RS look 1972. I am running 8's on the rear as well with 225/60 and RS flares. I just preferred the look of the 7's in the front and wanted to ensure I wouldn't have issues with clearance or rubbing. Sounds like I should be fine with 205/60. Would you recommend sticking with the 60's or going to 50 profile?

It all depends what you're going to do with the car...

There once was a time where you could get 'Ultra Performances' 60's, but that was over 20 years ago...
Then 55's, but that was about 15 years ago.... Now to get the same grip as the old 'Ultra Performance' street tires... you have to go with a DOT track tire in 50's... Unless you go with a vintage race AVON or Micheline TB... Now, if you were not spoiled by the old Yokohama AVS Intermediates or the Bridgestone S03's 'Street tires' of old … Then there is plenty of contemporary Hi Performance tires that will fill the bill..... I drove Lars' flared '72S hot rod with the new CN36's on 7's and 8's in 185 x 70 and 215 x 60 and was REALLY impressed !!!!

Spoiled bastard that I am, I run TOYO RA1 DOT track tires at 225 x 50 on all 4 on 7's and 8's.... I can get almost a year out of them...

I have to say the best all-round performance/look/ride/and even feel I ever got on my old car was over 20 years ago with the AVS's at 205 x 60 / 215 x 60 …. may be not the fastest or grippiest, but the best compromise of them all … If they only started making them again.....

Hope any of this rambling makes any sense...

    Cheers,

Thanks Chuck. Makes perfect sense. I found 205/60 Yoko AVS ES100 but no rears. Then I looked on Tirerack and found 205/50 and 225/50 Yoko Advan 052 with great reviews. Think I may give those a shot.

I loved the Bridgestone S03’s. Sigh.

    I use CN36’s.

Hmmmmm … Well I tried the 'split size' 50's for the track a pretty long time ago... And I always thought that the 205 x 50's looked too short in the wheel well.....

(Now I'm going to repeat earlier postings)

So, I was at the track watching a HSR West event.... In the C/Production class there was mostly early 911's... The rules were 7" max on wheels. However when I looked at the tire size's on all the competitors they were all running 225 x 50's on all four corners... And two things came to mind.....
    1. I tired 225 x 50's on the front 7's once before and they worked....(again I have rolled front fender returns)
    2. The HSR boys are a'hell'of'a'lot faster then me and that size was work'n great for'm !!!...

So, for my next set I was still apprehensive, thinking I was going to lose a little on 'turn-in' with the bigger tires, but I went for it...….. and boy what'a surprise !!! ...

It turns out I GAINED on turn-in with the 225's … and they fill the wheel wells,... and you can dismount and remount the fronts to the backs and get another few months more out of them....

I've convinced a few friends who run 50's on 7's and 8's to go 225's front and back... They still buy me drinks for their decision....

There were the few in the beginning who said "boy those fronts look pretty big"... but I haven't heard that for a long time now....

Make up your own mind... (photo attached) ….. just my extra .02 bud.....

    Cheers and have fun,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
Do all the guys running 225/50 on the front, do they have rolled fenders? Mine are stock and I would be concerned about clearance and rubbing.

    Hi guys,

I have a 72. Stock fenders and run Yokohama AO48 205 60 15 medium compound semi slicks all round.

I ran the first set with the car set up to factory ride height and then got the owner of International Motorsport NZ to have his boys lower the car and corner balance it for the 2nd set of tyres.

No way could I run any wider tyre on the front or rear without altering the guards. I have given the 2nd set plenty of herb on the track and (touch wood) never had rear paint blistering or rubbing.

Basically, the lower you go the less room ya got.

Love the dot Yoko AO48. and I agree with Chucks tyre life expectancy of about 1- 1.5 years worth before binning pending on how hard you are on them. Great in the wet as well for the first half of their life.

In the last pic the car is actually up on a concrete path on the camera side so the wheel and tyre are up in the fender somewhat.
