question on 4/68 wood steering wheel damage

    Dear all,

I bought in a stash a 4/68 wooden steering wheel, with butterfly, unseen.
I was told it is in a nice condition and ready to be used.
    hmm

On arrival today I had to notice depending on the position, top or bottom, the steering wheel has flaws that I only know from old wooden walking sticks.
Instead of touching it up, it was "repainted", which, however, makes the entire steering wheel appear "unsightly" in terms of feel.
I could say ok, scars of usage, and leave it, but I think it's improper.

This is the following steering wheel:
42 cm, stamped 4/68 with "Butterfly" horns and leather insert with embossed Porsche emblem

Is there a fix to make the steering wheel "pretty" again?

I'd send those photos to Bruce Crawford and get a professional opinion. He's done some very nice work for me in the past.

I already did follow the given advices and wrote to Bruce and also have got a feedback from him.
Thank you very much for this. I also looked up his steering wheels here on ESR, and wow...
perfect work, the way we all love it...

and the judgement of him, based on the pics, is as assumed..
maybe it can be saved, but more or less, if not:
a complete rework is necessary, worst case given.

I have to think about my next steps....and evaluate the options

    thank you all...

after a big odysee and error by DHL, thus resending the package to the US, it submerged for almost 6 weeks, and now back again, the wheel is finally in my hands.

I want to thank you fellows for the recommandation to let the wheel in the hands of Bruce Crawford.
Not only did I receive a concours mint reworked wheel, but also a perfectly renewed batwing , chromed ring, polstered center, with perfect paint and perfect horn ring....

It was worth every minute to wait and such a work perfection is a pleasure to hold in hands.
smooth touch, gentle surface .... a sensual experiance...

    Wow, Haul.
    Looks great.
That'll look excellent in your car.
How did he get the horn button "puffed" back up?

I'm not normally a wooden wheel lover, but that wheel looks incredible. Enjoy....
