Great info so far guys.
Trying to digest all this . Great threads on some great cars also.
Narrow Body or Wide Body seems to be decision #1. Tough call.
I really like narrow body cars but I own a few SWB/LWB cars already.
Really torn what direction to go. Rower says narrow body for sure and
he seems to have many years and a number of special vehicles in hs collection
already. '71 seems to be a tweener can go either way I suppose. Any guidance
greatly appreciated.
Don’t rely on my opinion! I just like subtle objects and the wide flares seemed so aggressive. I can see the appeal though. Since I have a narrow body factory lightweight werks car I would personally go wider flares just for variety. But if I didn’t I would stay earlier and narrower. I bet most would go wide body though. Fun decisions! Which one makes your pulse quicken and do you find most beautiful? That’s the one then.
Wide... but i'm biased. Narrow will save you money though. Flare cost + metal work. cheaper wheels / tyres.

Here's another that has caught my eye over and over through the years...
The OldenKott Tobacco '71 2.3 S/T
Simple wide body in black w/tangerine front and rear... looks like 7R fronts and 8" or 9" Miniltes in back...
Simple and badass...

Good points. Less engine though earlier too.
I’m coming from 356 GS and GT’s so grip hadn’t seemed to be my criteria! Learning to race with 1500 and 1600cc engines sure teaches you to keep the revs up and throttle steer. I always figured every 100rpm less I had coming out of a corner was going to cost me 1 plus car lengths.
I spent some time yesterday looking further at the ‘73 RSR’s given your earlier comment. What a great car. That’s why I think the market and perception divide between RS tourings and lightweights is silly; if you wanted to really race you bought a RSR. The lightweight/touring distinction is just bolt on stuff.
My friend has a 911R and that’s worth comparing to my ‘69 lightweight as both are purely designed race cars but with arguable streetability. Then the ST’s. At some point - maybe the RSR- they become pure race cars. I wonder where we would draw that line? Maybe it stops with the 911R? I was reading about tool bags and perhaps the criteria is whether the car was sold with a tool bag included!

I had a conv d for years and raced a 1954 356,great fun and little grip as you say.My first drive the day i passed my driving test was my dads 69 2.0ltr s,so i have big affection for a slab side, especially lwt s.The st and rsr i have done many thousands of road miles, and long runs, very useable on the road, may be some ear plugs!
The enjoyment of a 491st,is you can get some serious rubber underneath and have shed loads of grip and real fun on track or road,a true st or a close rep is a real joy to drive past the so called limit.
Thats looking good stretch.
