rear view mirror windshield, glue or tape?

    For a 1971, 911.
From birth, was the rear view mirror glued on with clear glue? Making the base show silver thru the window?

Some say it was black sticky tape.
Some say it was grey sticky tape.
(I think these showed up as fixes)

I think it was clear glue. That shows a circular machined pattern on raw aluminum.
I was the second owner on a 74 914. And it was clear glue.

71 was held on originally with double sided black sticky pad.

I'm with Ed. I have several one-owner (before me), low-mileage cars and all of them have mirrors held on by a black sticky pad.

Never glue as said above......always 2 sided sticky tape.

For what it's worth to the OP...

I have an ultra-low mile '74 914, original paint and original windshield and the mirror is attached by the same black sticky pad as the 911's.

Same thing on the mirror in this 36k-mile example on BaT: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1976-porsche-914-22/

    And this 44k-mile example https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1974-porsche-914-2/

Plus, the factory PET shows the 914 mirror attached with "adhesive plate for mirror base" (part # 901 731 133 20) for all years.

Still available - 901-731-133-20 - I bought one a couple months ago when I was reassembling my '72T after paint.

Did you order from the dealer? If so, was your pad black? I ordered one from the dealer some time back and it was an incorrect dark grey. I've been paying up for the SM pads ever since.

Then I shall find a black sticky and get my car proper.

I did this too, only to later discover it is a 3M pad that costs 2 bucks for a piece that could make several pads. Oh well.

BTW, here is an installation hint. Put both your visors down and then centre the mirror mount in the cutout space. I will look perfect and the visors will work properly.

On my 74 the mirror uses the adhesive tape. The tape pad sits in a recess on the mirror base. Sometimes installers grind down the walls of the recess in order to use glue. If this is the case, the mirror will vibrate a bit using the adhesive pad. The sides of the recess stabilize the mirror against the windshield. I’ve bought a couple of used mirrors that were useless because of this modification.
