What a shame though to see the surfing associations turn the surfing experience into a circus. I saw friends and others surfing attitude turn from pleasure to an unsustainable quest for some kind of recognition... it put guys in the water who felt they had and deserved certain waves so they could get the experience and recognition to compete...
Great thread guys! My first surfboard was a 5'10" Doug Haut. It's what I learned on. I miss the West Side. I used to ride my dirt bike at the dirt field by Wrigley gum factory and rip that up on a dirt bike then ride home.

I guess it was 03/19/2011.... maybe only the date in the camera at the time.... any way, they had a big shapers and designers wing ding in Santa Cruz. They honored Doug Haut and the city gave him an award and key to the city. The picture is Doug holding the rails of the winner of a shaping contest.... The task was to recreate "the bump".... with Doug being judge of course...doughaut.jpg

Does anyone in the Santa Cruz area know Steve Colleta? I stayed with him and his French wife for about 3 months in that area just before I moved to Aspen. He is or was a shaper.

i do not personally know him, but he was in the Haut contest above. If my memory is correct he did not finish his example in time allotted ?. At that time, what i had heard was that he was a top shaper.... i have no knowledge of him that is current...
