    Red-bordered engine bay decals - 1969

    Hi All,

Can anyone tell me approximately at which chassis number the red bordered engine bay decals changed to black bordered?

Done a search ( but happy to be directed) - all I have found is that “EARLY production ‘69s had red, later had black”.

Can those of you who have ‘69s chime in please? Chassis number in question is within the first 150 Targas made. I assume that is considered EARLY? #805 has black as expected as the last ‘69 Targa one was #858.

Helping prep a ‘69E for Concours.

    TIA,
    Gary

No idea if there was a different date for a 911 vs. a 912 or for Karmann vs. Porsche. My December 4, 1968 Karmann built 912 Coupe (#1383) has the black border.

    911S #119300910 (build-date = March 19, 1969) has a black border engine sticker.

Only the tire-pressure sticker has a red border.

This would be interesting to resolve. My 911T Karmann coupe, 119121618, built Feb 3, 1969 came to me with the stickers long gone, unfortunately.

It is interesting how the VINs fail to align with the build dates in this thread. Did Karmann and Zuffenhausen each get a block of the new 9-digit VINs a priori, which were therefore offset versus the corresponding production dates? Perhaps one of the kardex gurus might jump in here?

Yes, the Porsche cars and Karmann cars had separate VIN series since the "coach-builder" is essentially built into the VIN.
    119xyzzzz
    where x is the model: 1=T, 2=E, 3=S
where y is the body type: 0=Porsche coupe, 1=Porsche Targa, 2=Karmann coupe
    where zzzz is the serial#
Thus you had 8 different and independent sets of VIN's on the go at the same time with different build rates. You certainly cannot compare the VIN from one series with a VIN from another series. If I understand your question correctly, there were no blocks, just complete and independent series.
