We set IDLE in N, but now have to use the hand trottle at a traffic light waiting in D, cause otherwise the engine will stall and "smoke" even at warm temperatures.
How to set IDLE on a 73 911E MFI with Sportomatic?
L or D and braking or in N?

Putting trans in 'D' should not stall engine, idle was set in 'N' at about 900 RPM and should only drop a couple hundred RPM, you have a engine tuning problem,,,,,and sporto or not, the engine shouldn't start "smoking" When was the last time an ignition tune up was done? Why is it smoking?, mechanically worn out?

Idle drops from 1100 in N to 700 in D.
We reduced smoking after traffic light waiting by fixing the RPM switch.

Yeah, that's too much RPM drop, but nonetheless engine should idle at 700. Has it always done this? Not sure what the speed switch has to do with smoking at idle? So what you're saying is that it still smokes at idle??

Smoking? It is possible that If your piston rings are worn out and you have excessive blow by, that will choke out your engine at lower rpm's
My 2.4 used to smoke because of worn valve guides.... Check that the 2 vacuum non-return valves are not leaking. My car happily idles at 600 rpm under load.
The 911 Sporto is driven by my wife nearly daily in the city. We replaces all vacuum and fuel hose, compression+nozzel spray test, cleaned nozzels and overhault MFI pump, alternator, HKZ ignition box,RPM relay, distributer and tach.... 1 1/2 year ago.
set idle, ignition, sporto shift points,...
I checked all points recently, and these had been all (without the set point of the RPM switch, which is fixed) within spec.
The car is smoking during start, low rpm cold run and stop and go, also when engine or wheater is warm.
THE RPM drop is to high. The car doen not run smooth at stop under load (radio/healdight), the alternator is ok.
During cold run we have to use hand trottle even in summertime. ok the garage temp is 15-20°C.
Since the engine is smoking a lot it means it is burning a lot of oil which is coking up the spark plugs. I think that will need to be fixed to solve the running problem.

I believe your smoking issue might be causing it to choke out. Try removing the breather hose going from the oil tank to the air filter housing. See if that stops it from dying. . If so, a top end overhaul is needed.
I forgot to ask, is it blue or black smoke? Have you checked the plugs for fouling? Have you checked AFR (Oxygen or CO)? As I said above, my car drops about 400 rpm. Always has for the 30 years that I have owned it. I recently did a complete top end overhaul and Gus rebuilt my pump about 5 years ago. Just thinking about it a little more, the only time that I saw smoking was due to 2 (brand new) cracked plugs.
