Thread: 901 muffler detail

    901 muffler detail

For the mufflers I am working on, see here https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...le-SWB-muffler I am trying to figure out if the mufflers used on the 901's and probably very early other cars had the seperate slide over chrome (illustration 32) as seen on the later cars or a different set-up?

My parts book is from 66/67 and the detail is confusing. It both lists the chrome tip as well as what appears to be a replacement muffler tip (illustration 2/1)

    TIA

Unfortunately I can't answer question about 901 tips, but that replecement muffler tip is still available from Porsche. Made in Denmark though (as I bought it and replaced that on 901/1 Leistritz I have in for sale- section. That is not those super-early ones with "extra layer")

I just e-mailed with Dave DiMaria and according to his notes the 901's had the chrome tips which were part of the actual muffler and not the slide over tips as the later cars. I am pretty sure we will be able to duplicate this detail. Anybody out there have more information? I'd be interested to learn if the curved pipe had the ripples on the inside radius like the later systems or was smooth, I would expect it to have ripples

On the drawing it shows shadow where the ripples would be?

But also haven’t Dave this done for car 133?

Richard, I believe he indeed duplicated the tip detail and had the leistritz logo and type number engraved. As far as I know he did not duplicate the wrap around shield

Your wrapped muffler is the first clear shot I have ever seen. Probably none of the 64 cars have one any ore. I think the drawing #1 is the 901 muffler, yours has 2/1 (re)placed (at the leistriz factory or at a dealer). After that the common Leistritz was introduced?

    1964 Mufflers chrome tip

Some of the period photos of the chrome tip - no ripples in the bend.

Note: the photos were used and reused during the 1964, 1965 and 1966 publications.

Bob, thank you so much for posting this, very helpful. This now leaves the question when these mufflers were phased out in favour for the sleeved chrome tip ones. A friend with a very nice unrestored '65 #3013xx reports having the same muffler as I posted. I will likely have both versions made as only the tip detail differs and the remaining construction appears to be the same

    John,

Thanks for the input. If both cars did not have any changes this would suggest the change from the "901" type muffler to the second style was somewhere between #3011xx - #3013xx.

I had more discussions with the manufacturer today and so far the estimate is that these will run in the 1500 range each. Not cheap compared to the Dansk crap out there but these would be hand build in a small series. If some more people would be willing to step-up to the plate we might be able to get the price further down. So far I have five hard commitments and 2-3 soft ones. Current thinking is that we will have both the "901" style made and the later style with the difference between the two being the actual exhaust pipe (chrome plated with the angled end versus painted with the chrome tip)

Talking about the "901" muffler, as we do not have an original at hand we need to estimate the angle and radius of the actual exhaust pipe. The pictures I have reviewed is that it is the same as the later mufflers. Curious what the perspective of others is.
