    Solex Care and Maintenance

Are you running rebuilt Solex carbs on your 65/66? If so how difficult is it to keep them running properly?
    Thanks!

I have a set of solexes rebuilt by Paul Abbott on my stock 2.0. Been running them for about 3 years without touching them. This spring I made a few adjustments to the butterfly links to rebalance the airflow for each individual carbs at idle, and adjusted the idle screws for lean best condition. If you have some understanding of how the carbs work and how the adjustments change the performance characteristics, you should be able to do it yourself.

The Solex carbs come close to having no moving parts. I've gone more than 3 years and the car drives fine.

The big problem with the Solexes is remembering how to tune them.

Solexes can behave poorly if the linkages are not adjusted to be free from excess movement, in particular I refer to the "layshaft" that the three turnbuckles are attached to. Since there is no positive throttle stop for each of the carbs, the "closed throttle" position relies upon a single stop located on the layshaft. If the ball sockets are not adjusted to be snug at each end of the layshaft then throttle closd becomes erratic causing embarrasing idling performance. Once off the idling position then they will be OK.

Solexes have more moving parts than Webers with six accelerator pumps vs. two on Webers and six throttle adjusting turnbuckles & two layshafts vs. zero for Webers.
