reinforcement of front tower shocks - done at factory?

    Dear all,

while going through my documents I stumbled across the pages with the reinforement of the front tower shock,
    Part Nr. 901.501.333./334.20,
    Instruction KD-T Nr.16

I have in copy the complete manual „how to do“, but also a written supplement to the „I 13“ information letter, dated 31.August 1965.

In this letter all chassis numbers for the rework are listed and also the upcoming numbers, effective from 16. august 1965.

    see attached

my question now how to understand the issue.

Had these works done by the factory, or later on by the dealership anywhere abroad?

Does anyone of you have the correlating letter in english?

    with best regards
    stay safe & healthy

This is interesting information. Looking through the columns of VIN's it appears to be a bit of hit & miss. So, quite possibly dealer rework was involved. I suppose that the VIN's could be compared with my database in an effort to locate specific examples of those reworked, and those that were not, and compare actual examples.

Looks like dealer welded to the early cars

The shimmy in the steering on the very early cars caused the steering wheel to move to a heavier - steel frame - (compare also to the really heavy 1967-68 steel steering wheels with the weighted hubs).

Factory review looks to center on the stability of the top shock mounts with these examples of repairs by dealers: note similarity of butterfly shapes but how different the weld quality.

The example in Primer is car 301181, the other are from 1964 and January 1965.

I was always told that these reinforcements were sent to the dealer and installed by the dealer. Thus the Very nasty welds that are on most of them. I have restored many early cars and none of the welds
are consistent. It makes sense that they were dealer installed.

Those look just like the rough factory welds I recall from a certain ‘74 RSR I spent a bit of time with...
