Thread: 1965 or 1966 MY vin numbers

1965 or 1966 MY vin numbers

I have a Porsche with Euro gauges that you have had for 42 years, did a lot of modifications early on.
Vin number is 301731. Best I can tell is it was built in late June or Early July 1965. It is titled as a 1966.
I was told that cars built before June 1965 weÂ’re officially 1965 MY cars and July forward weÂ’re 1966 MY.
Any information or comments will be appreciated.
    Thanks, Gary

You're near the edge but a car built in June or July of '65 should be a 1965 model year car and your VIN falls into the known range for late '65 model year cars. Congrats.

That would be a 65 MY car. It will have a flat knee pad, not upturned at the ends. I have some data on the car.

It looks like we're supposed to blame Lee Iacocca.

    Hi Gary,

I have an engine (901785) that belonged to VIN 301729, which is very close to your VIN 301731.
According to the Kardex, the car with VIN 301729 was delivered on 24 June 1965, so a real MY65 car.

To add to the info, RHD cars 301930 and 301940 were built during July 1965 and have 1965 model year features. 301940 was completed on 31 July

The Kardex dates are generally the invoice date from the factory to the distributor, and the delivery date to the first owner/warranty commencement. Here are the delivery dates for the body from Reutter to Porsche:
