Probably use lacquer thinner to remove the paint.

I took a look at my Fuchs redone by Al Reed (not mounted yet) and the the lug holes are painted. Looked at some by Harvey Weidman online and they were also painted. So basically all of the top restorers paint the lug holes (not just Ed McNamee) and I should remove that paint?

Mine were done by a well known specialist here in the UK who specialises in Fuchs restoration. The lug holes were not painted.

A power drill, a sacrificial lug nut, and some valve lapping compound should fix the problem.

+1 The easiest method by far, rubbing compound works well too.

From what I've seen, Harvey is the only restorer in the US who does not paint the lug seats. As has been noted, it's not that hard to remove the paint after the fact. But it always make me wonder, since it's also not that hard to keep the paint off the seats. This is my spare ready for me to apply paint. Note the washers sitting in the lug holes...

I stand corrected on Harvey's restorations. Just scanned a for sales thread and it looked painted. More i look it is probably just from the lugs.
