Advise on sourcing a flat 6

Hello, hope I’m posting this in the right spot. I’m currently rebuilding my first air cooled car a 1972 914 that’s been sitting for 20+ years. Although not a 911 I’m seeking the 911 s registry’s help. Being a hardcore Porsche enthusiasts since my first ride in the backseat of a 930, I’m a bit obsessed with the sound, character and heritage of the flat 6. What’s the most economical way to source one? Does anyone have one for sale on here? I’d really like to learn how to rebuild one so I’m not worried about a tired engine. Does anyone have any advice on rebuilding a 6? Any horror stories? Being in high school my budget is practically nothing ,although I’d ideally like to swap a 6 into my 914 i wouldn’t be opposed to selling my 914 to afford the right engine project and then find another 914 down the road.

You can't buy or rebuild a 911 engine without a budget: both will easily exceed 10k in materials alone. There's a great book on rebuilding 911 engines by Wayne Dempsey:

I would buy that first and read it so you know what's involved. Also, why would you sell your 914 in order to buy an engine? Then you have an engine with no car...

Id skip the 6 for a while and get it running with the type 4 motor it has. A big bore kit, dual Webers or Dellortos, and an 009 distributor make a nice running motor. When you have more money then do the motor swap, it wont be cheap but it will be worth it. Try finding a local Porsche restorer and offer to help out in exchange for parts. I used to do that when I was starting out. I did a 6 cyl. conversion on Jake Raby's 914-4 motor test car about 15 years ago. He is fairly close to Athens and may be of help.

Thanks for your recommendation! I am thinking about rebuilding a 911 engine and will buy this book.
