Thread: 906 Lower Valve Covers

    906 Lower Valve Covers

I have been after a set of 906 lower valve covers for my 911R prototype engine build. Lots of hunting and asking around. That sort of part does not really show up on ebay.

Last year as Ernie W. and I were walking around the Phoenix Club, I mentioned settling for a set of early sand cast aluminum covers. He generously informed me that it is the same cover. One of those things you never see unless you have an eye like Ernie!

A little machine work some texturing to replicate the sand cast surfaces. Then off to Ernie for a DOW coated magnesium looking finish.

    Thanks Ernie! Wanted to share.

Nice job, especially the sand cast structure. Do you have a picture of the engine you are aiming to copy?

    Hi Richard,

Thanks! The engine I am building lands between 911R Prototype #4 and 911R 07. On the early R engines there were a number of 906 parts used. True to Porsche form they were using up what they had. These details were discovered by Gordon Ledbetter with his extensive 911R engine work. Items such as 906 chain housings / covers, early cam towers void of spray bars, 6 bolt lower bolt pattern (This is where the 906 valve covers come into play.), 906 sand cast small neck crankcase breather.

Later Rs ran the pressure cast mag covers and chain housings with traditional 1968 modeled magnesium 11 bolt valve covers. Also the pressure case mag crankcase breather with small neck.

This is my interpretation of what the engine in 911R Prototype #5 would have looked like as these changes were appearing.
