Built September 1970. (Sold as 1971)
Porsche built not karmann

. . . but it came with a decal --- not a metal tag

The decal was a 1970 thing that did not last. Only for Porsche built, not Karmann. Apparently they had a tendancy to fall off.

I have an early MFI 73’ metallic gold targa. The paint tag is painted red; a legacy of it’s repaint from the 80’s. I will remove the paint to see what it says... tbc.

if you use laquer thinner...it will eat up the black ink on the tag.

if you use brake fluid. it will probably work the best. it might not attack the ink. (hard to say)
you would have to tape everything of real good. and let the brake fluid soak for a day or two.
keep applying twice a day.

aircraft paint stripper might work too. but I dont know if it will attack the ink.

Yes Tom, 8810 = gold metallic. So it says on the COA that I have.

Yes Tom, 8810 = gold metallic. So it says on the COA that I have.

You need to be careful there, the xxyy code form was in use on the paint badge only for 1970 & 1971 model years. Thereafter it was still used in the computer records and thus transcribed onto the CoA. It is more a marketing code as opposed to the actual paint code. From the 1972 model year the normal form stamped on the paint badges was in the form xxx-y-z; where xxx is the proper paint code, y was the paint facility, and z was a manufacturer code. So while code 88 was the marketing code, the actual paint code varied from 133 to 140 to 144. So please be careful when using the CoA paint coding since from 1972 it will not be what is marked on the badge for a long while.

Unfortunately, my 911 no longer has the original paint. For me it is important: my Targa was delivered in gold-metallic.
