1966 912. My first car. Bought it Nov. 25, 1988. Still have it.

Was it normal for R engines or race engine fans to be painted “motor-meister red” ?

I'm no expert but what I see is:

Oil cooler is for street engine, race motors had disc style oil filter where that oil cooler is located. Also, I think the lower cam cover looks to have too many studs for an early race engine. Shroud around perimeter would be fiberglass and not steel. Rear cross member has stiffening L-bend along top edge, it is a later design than for earliest engines. Webers look good but serial numbers indicate a later manufacture date than 1967. Red fan is odd for sure.

Perhaps a "Sports Purpose" engine for 1968 or later 911?

The sheet metal and lower valve covers were used on production R’s, but along with oil cooler, no center oil cams, no race fan and housing and regular production crankcase with replacement Delivar head studs, I’d call it a period built race engine.
