    . . . Something Custom

    Perfect

I always wondered --- as values for some 'old' cars escalate . . . why would anyone pay so much for something that's only a collection of some few bits?

    Like this Ferrari --- sorry . . . Faux-rari

Unlike 'modern' cars that are an amalgam of complexly-formed metallic panels infused with all manner of precision-molded plastic and what-not, welded and riveted and bonded and glued in pretty incomprehensible (and utterly un-restoreable) ways . . . all managed/controlled by fragile electronics with code that's obsolete almost as soon as it's written

. . . old cars are just made-up of sheet metal and tubes and bits of rubber and wire . . . all readily available, malleable . . . restorable . . .

    . . . and duplicatable

Cobras come to mind. You can pay seven figures for an 'old/real' one --- or, for 20% of the price? . . . buy 110% of the performance . . .

    . . . spelled K-I-R-K-H-A-M . . .

Have you ever seen a Cobra in pieces? I've seen lawn-furniture that's more sophisticated. And its got a frickin' truck motor in it! With hand tools and a little help from the Manny, Moe, and Jack, this thing 'll out-live your Grankids! Yet-yet --- people will donate organs to buy a 'real' one that's too expensive for them to ever use properly --- if, at all

    Then there's Singer . . .
    https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...-Singer-Singer

    Criminy --- this outfit's whole business model is custom --- er . . . re-imagining Porsches . . . for how much?

Heck --- half the cars on THIS SITE are nothing like anything that Porsche built . . .

    . . . and some are better for it . . .
    https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...hlight=laramie

Think about. Why would you spend X-amount of money to buy something 'old' . . .

    . . . when for a fraction-of-X --- you could get something 'new'?

    Keep going

How long before cars become so out-dated and toxic and ridiculous to use that --- the only ones left on the road . . . are special

    And Future Owners, rather then buy something 'new' --- that's safe and clean and boring . . . they'll build something 'old' . . . special . . .

    Think About It . . .

. . . Dave McNeil (the WeatherTech Guy) dropped $70m on his GTO

Seriously? What would it take? --- to put together one of these? . . .

. . . to layout some tubes, weld-up a chassis, source an engine block (Ferrari Classiche does this all the time --- for a price ), then have some bodywork fabricated + painted?

    A sh!t-load-less than $70m, I'll bet

Whatever was paid for here? --- sure wasn't metal or glass or paint

    Put it Another Way . . .

    . . . you can't drive provenance, can ya?

    Wouldn't dare

    I see things quite differently.
You either pay for the history linked to the object, or a tool to achieve a level of experience/performance.

And the best of both world is certainly to have an original car AND a copy to enjoy without troubles. Usually, the tool is much less expensive than the history.
Or you are very brave and add your own history to the original car.
