    Gauge repair question

    Hello,
I have had my gauges repaired or replaced over the last several years, all except the oil pressure/temp gauge. It works fine but the numbers are all yellowed compared to the other gauges, I can take off the glass and bezel but has anybody had success in cleaning the numbers again without destroying them?
    Thank you
    Chris

you are in luck. The oil pressure/temp gauge can easily be serviced, there are a few flat-head screws that allow the gauge assembly to be removed from the housing, you can certainly clean it, start with a damp cloth...perhaps a gentle household cleaner, and move up to more aggressive methods if required.

chris, as you may know. some years the numbers are white, some years 'off white'....
i think off white stopped around 1971. I cant remember the exact year...
and i may even have it backwards...but there were a couple years cream/ivory and a couple or more in clean pure white.

sometimes there are mixed gauges, over the years of things being replaced. regarding ivory and whites.

Interesting. I have up until now thought that it was the sun that caused the numbers on the gauges on my 911 E from 1970 to have turned from white to off white.

I’ve got a NOS 1970 tachometer and the numbers are white. And I also looked at the pics on the 700 mile 911 S and the numbers seems to be white.

69 is definitely not white. More like ivory.

I have to dig out my nos tacho and take a close look. I’m going to restore the gauges on my car and I like the ivory/off white lettering more than the white..

I looked it this morning and I was wrong on all points - 1) the tachometer is dated 9/68 and not 70 2) the numbers are ivory.

All great information, thank you. My car is a 71'. This was definitely a project car which I enjoy, the tach I know was not original to car but had thought other gauges were original. Had clock converted to Quartz so unclear if numbers were changed at this time as well. Speedo appears to have white numbers as does the fuel/oil level so a little confused regarding what would be correct. I have rebuilt every function of the car including the bodywork and paint but it was never meant to be a concours car just a nice driver, and driven hard. With all the other gauges having whiter version numbers I think I will update the one gauge to white letters/numbers as well to match. Thank you.

I have a 12/69 clock (has to be at least a 1970 car, since it doesn't have the threaded rods for mounting that a '69 would have to have) that absolutely has ivory numbers. ALL of my '72 gauges are certainly white, and have never been opened. (I have a gauge problem) I have a 4/73 clock with absolutely white numbers. Unfortunately I don't have any 1971 gauges currently.
