    List of 1968 Sports Purposes 911S, L and T/Rs

Here’s a list of the factory built or modified 1968 model year competition cars that I’ve pulled together based on the threads in this registry and internet searches. Cars were included in this list if they were built with the Rallye-kit or Sport Kit I or II. I don’t claim to have any specialized knowledge on these cars, just an interest in better understanding the different configurations of 1968 competition cars. Please send me any corrections, changes or additions and I will update this list.

    Thanks,
    Eric

All of the 911L 901/30 information comes from the excellent thread by Thomas Lundeval. It is included to provide a complete picture of all 1968 competition cars.

    Hugh,

Thanks for all of the additions. I'll get my list updated with this information.

Do you have any idea on the total number of T/Rs that were completed? There is a big difference between the number of 911S coupes and targas built versus the number of S engines (408xxxx) and S sporto engines (418xxxx) produced if the final numbers in all of these series are representative of what was actually built. The former is 1267+442=1709 and the latter is 1547+227=1774.

    Thanks,
    Eric

There is always a significant excess of engines over chassis.

no I don't think anyone does know exactly how many. it would be possible (if access was granted by the factory - which is unlikely) to go through every 1968 T kardex and look for S engines and other signs of a competition car - but even that would not be definitive as they could have been retrospectively built by the factory on an ordinary T
They always make more engines than cars to provide spares but if there were 20 to 25 T/R's that would eat enough into the "surplus engines" to leave a small balance for spares (and extra race engines etc)

    Hi Eric,

    Superb list.
    Here my addition in blue.
Sorry, I will not list my car numbers (1968 911S with Sport Kit II). I've seen too many duplicates or newborn cars around the world.....

    Claudius,

Thanks for providing the additional information on the 911S coupes equipped with the Sports Kit II. It is interesting that all of the iisted production dates fall in the 1967 calendar year.

    Regards,
    Eric
