Thread: Is This Still Considered NOS?

    Is This Still Considered NOS?

    So in 1969 an independent Porsche repair shop does mechanical work for a paint shop next door on a SWB 911 involved in a light rear end collision.

    Part of the repair includes replacing the damaged muffler with a new factory part.

    Once paint work is completed the car owner asks shop next door to install a sport muffler of some kind instead before he takes car back.

    Customer says hold the muffler and I'll come back to pick it up in my other car; name goes on part, goes in corner, eventually gets buried and forgotten.

    Fast forward 50 years and the shop closes and during the clean out this muffler is exhumed.

    The now 78 year old shop owner (retired) relays the story.

    The muffler was installed but at most saw 5 mins of run time to go from one garage to the next door paint booth; so would this still be considered NOS?

    In my dealer days we used to call the new "take offs".

    I plan to sell this since it is to early for my 1971 911, but want to represent the part accurately and price it fairly; any input is appreciated.

    Good question. If your price is reasonable I'd put it on my '69 that was restored using mostly NOS parts. Rich

    I'd call it a new take-off. I'm also interested if you're selling it.

    Thanks for the input from both of you and the interest in buying it.

    Will decide on a price and contact you both.

    Curious . . .

    . . . what are the differences between the mufflers fitted to a SWB/2.0-liter . . .

    . . . and a LWB/2.2 liter? . .

    Part nos referenced include . . .
    * 901.011.08/11 . . . stamped '68 + '69
    * 901-011.09/11 . . . no stamp seen

    . . . both stamped 'Leistritz'

    Also . . .

    - Version 2, used to somewhere late 1965, same as version 1 in general construction but tip not chrome plated and end not cut at an angle, inside radius smooth
    - Version 3, used from late '65 to somewhere in 1967, same as Version 2 but inside radius of tip has pronounced ripples from the bending

    Are we sure about what we're looking at, here?

    The muffler combined with the unobtainable square edge tip is a valuable piece.

    I looked at it as kind of a bonus.

    Since the muffler was installed they put on the new tip, so they will stay together.

    And no driveway scrapes on it either
