I just love these seats, but the idea of driving anwhere without a headrest gives me the heebie-jeebies... Somehow I like to be in command of my whole body.

I'm assuming everyone already knows the answer to this but me. Were these corduroy inserts originally black, faded to brownish, or were they originally something less than black?

The original cord inserts were made from black cotton (or whatever color)... which fades over time. The newer cords I've seen for automotive use are not 100% cotton, they have a poly blend so they don't fade (or fade less). I have some original cord insert seats and if you pull the fabric back from under a fold you can see it was truly black.

    Thanks Eric.

Kind of funny. It's that "classic" brownish look that we kind of like. Now that we know the correct color is black, we'd may be more inclined to go with a Pepita/houndstooth!

hello jay, you got it right to the point: newly upholstered seats look best when you can't see the restoration at all. that means 100% identical materials and perforations for the letherette or pepita. with cord, however, this means that you should reproduce exactly this optical degree of wear. a good saddler can do that. Here is an example: Recaro rallye 1 from 1967. the seat has been completely restored! please note the correct diamand shape perforation. likewise the new (!) cord, which looks used. If the seams are done correctly, as shown here, it will be difficult even for a specialist to see that it has been newly restored. for me it borders on art.

Do you know the source for that beautiful “patina brown” corduroy? It’s beautiful.
