200 hp for a 2.2 for $20K? Those numbers have nice symmetry, but I am not sure they add up. The car is a mess that you want to restore back to near-original, the matching numbers engine was just redone and now you want to do the top end again to build a 200 hp "firecracker engine", and there is nothing you can do to "strengthen" the 901 transmission. As a Porsche Club Racing racecar for someone with deep pockets, sure. As a car for "street and spirited driving", I don't get it.

Unlike 2.2 liter crankshafts all 2.4 liter crankshafts are counterweighted and balanced to a point . Only the 2.2 S & E crankshafts are counterweighted .
Richy, now you are confusing my old brain. Why would a 2.4 crankshaft with 2.4 S P's & C's end up with too low compression ratio? Isn't that what the '72 S has out of the factory? Or are the heads different between the '70T and '72 S?

I did a 2.0 914-6 last year, went 87.5mm slip in pistons (made it 2.45L) with a 66mm counterweighted crank, solex cams and bunch of special sauce throughout and it made 210hp. Reved like crazy.

Yep, I'm nuts, I know. The price was right even if the motor had been a basket case. So I'm starting off with a "bargain" so to speak. 200HP is not that far off the '70 S at 180HP so i would assume that a refreshed 901 should handle the additional power. I'm told that there are ways to strengthen the 901 to some extent but don't know squat about it at this point.

    Now we are talking.
    Recall which P&C's you used?
Recall what head work was done?

The 901 transmission can be reinforced with an aluminum intermediate plate and a billet side cover. This should help.

    Good luck.

Man, that sounds like a nice engine. Street or race?

A lot of people use 2.2S pistons with 2.4 crankshafts for higher hp. The C R. is just right for sporty driving and can be adjusted with base shims.

^^^^^^^^^ That transmission is simply gorgeous. What paint did you use for the casing?
Are the side cover and intermediate plate from California Motorsports?
