Thread: 2.2 Need More Power

  1. #41
I dunno, I really appreciate these sorts of threads as the information (and, particularly, the observations) shared get me thinking about what parts to collect for "next time." And none more than revisiting Conklin's old article, which is excellent but for some heavy handed edits. He selected the 2.5 as his "winner," but went on to build the 2.8 iirc? And I can see why, given his observations…

Time with my "2.2E+" tells me I could live with it as is and just keep driving it for another 20-30 years if that's my lot. If I was willing to flare my car, and add a 915, the 2.8 sounds pretty appealing—but time spent with other early 911 engines and comments in this thread as well as Conklin's superb article suggest the ideal setup, for me, might be a 2.2S with short gears. And, if budget permits, with MFI or EFI and everything built to rev to 8000 rpm. I'm far more interested in a bright/keen engine that sings up top than one that makes good torque down low. My car isn't an around-town driver, and I don't have or want the tires for big torque.

Oh, definitely - I'm right there with you. I love these conversations, they are a large part of the enjoyment I derive from this hobby. We all love to plan, and dream, and scheme for "next time". And it's a lot of fun to help someone else as they do so. There is just so much to consider, to talk over, to mull and contemplate. That's one of the big attractions of these cars - so many possibilities, with no one definitive "right answer". Hell, it seems just as soon as we finish that "next one" that was the "right answer" at the time, the question changes, and off we go again. What great good fun... And, boy, the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience that comes out during these discussions... priceless...

@Bert, that has to be the cleanest 901... do you recall how short you went with 2,3,4?

Not to derail this further but after posting on Friday could not think of a better thing to do! Becky & I took a 2 + hr Spirited drive here in the mountains and than a stop at a favorite roadhouse as they were about to open. would have left the top at home but knew we would be out after dark and getting colder. We also took the car to the Hill Country Rally a couple years ago.

Back on topic I have a 69E long block that had been rebuilt I got several years ago in a lot of parts, disassembled to confirm all I was as told, and it is packed away in a cabinet in the garage, counter weighted crank (Std / Std) new bearings, new countershaft gears / chains, resized & rebushed rods, Waiting for something to do with it, I do regret selling the heads and a set of Webers & manifolds after first buying it when I only had a couple 912's but had not got the 71 Targa yet.

    Best Regards

I previously used the 1967 911S gear set of AFMSX, which was good except for the short 5th gear. Freeway driving was revving too high and wasting gas.

So I changed to AFMSZ, when I recently had the LSD installed with the reinforced side cover. Top gear on the freeway is much better and I don't use 5th gear much, when I do canyon carving.

A interesting thread indeed. I enjoy reading about your experiences trying to build the perfect 6. Pete's idea of a 2.5 that spins to 8K would be a hoot. The little lump in my car has 4 50mm throttle bodies with K&N's. When they really open up, I can't even hear the exhaust. It's louder than the Green 70 914-6 with a 2.2S I had in the early 80's. I'm not sure you guys that prefer the S powerband would go for this. Torque comes on at 3500 and the engine pulls to 6800 strong and I redline it at 7200. Craig Smith out of Morrow Bay, who I bought my 912 from runs his 2 CAM 4 to 7500. The graph is of an engine close to mine. Mine makes about 10 more HP as my heads had a lot of work done to them and had titanium valves added. Jerry Woods just built a 2.5 that makes 230 hp.
    Here's my 901. B, GA, N, U, ZA with a Wave-Trac TBD. 90% of my drives are 6 to 12,500 feet of altitude.
