Your car came with a 400MM wheel. The 380mm wheel on your car was added by a previous owner. You are right about negating the benefit, though. A aftermarket steering wheel may be just the answer for you.

Maybe I was mistaken then but I thought the 380mm wheel was the correct wheel. There are a few threads on here I believe stating 380mm was standard.

380mm wheels came on 73RSs and 914s. Your car came with a 400mm wheel. Remove your horn push and take a picture of the center of your steering wheel. That will tell you what it is and where it came from. Yes, there is endless info on this forum about steering wheels.

My car is a 73 RS which would explain why it’s a 380mm wheel then. As I said earlier in the thread I don’t have access to the car right now as we’re in lockdown and car is in storage because with salt on the roads now is not the time to be driving these cars.

OK, I missed that minor detail. I assumed from your original post you had had a plain old T,E or S.

I didn’t mention it because I didn’t think it was relevant. Learn something everyday about these great cars

Cheib you there are a few alternatives.
A rep deep dish rsr wheel.
A suede Flat rim momo prototipo wheel,360mm,i use one on my rsr Rather than the original rsr wheel, looks the part with endless spacers and even a offset spacer as used on the 993rs sport wheel which raises by app 10mm,as in up towards the screen not towards the driver .

can send a pic if it helps.

Thanks Yellow that’s really helpful. I think there’s also a period Momo wheel with a dish so I guess that is an option too (but probably expensive). I know you’ve driven a lot of these cars, is there much difference in the steering weight when using say a 360mm wheel vs a 380mm one ? Have you used the offset spacer yourself ? I am guessing that must create a slightly different feel to the steering ?

I think I am going to have to sit in the car and try and work out what say a 300mm spacer is going to move the standard wheel far enough away from my legs. I think a combination of smaller wheel with say a 300mm spacer is probably a better solution that using say a 600mm spacer with the standard wheel as that might bring the wheel too close.
