    1973 85 liter fuel tank

I looked and can't get the search to work for 85 liter/litre fuel tank. There was a one year only plastic 85 liter tank used for 1973 911E, 911S and Carrera (optional for 911T) 911s not fitted with air conditioning. Were these available on US-spec. cars? Parts catalog does not say they were not. Some countries didn't allow the plastic tank -- is the US one of them?

There is a photo in page 37 of my original Authenticity book from 1988. I would like a high res. color image for publication in the new book (May 2021????). All cars I currently have on file for 1973 have the standard steel 62-liter tank.

    Thanks!

Brett- My car is a 73S delivered through Sonauto Motors in Paris in April of 73. It came with an 85L plastic fuel tank. I recently had the car repainted so if you want a pic of an original car, mine's not the one:

    Hi Nick,

Actually, for what I want in the book -- that photo is great. It shows the plastic tank with the X on the top. Can you send a high res version to me at: 356drb@indy.net and if you include your address, I'll send you a book -- hopefully in May.

K Kurz Hessental still produces the blow molded tanks in 85L and 110L. The ST used the 110L tank as did the RSR. The 110L has better ground clearance than the RS tank. Those should really have a skid plate as they ride low in the chassis.

The RS is like the original with the "X" is still in it. They don't have K. Kurz Hessental GmbH on them as it's been shortened to Hessental Container GmBH.

I put one in my '74 to be done with any rust and/or corrosion once and for all.

Nick, note missing hose clamp that secures filler pipe to to strap on inner fender. There should be 2 clamps, the one there + another.
Also late 85L were changed, as per RS book. The late tank has more ground clearance than the originals. G

Inner fender strap only on Euro cars, for plastic tank installation.

They do hang low and a skid plate is a good idea. Ask Dave Buhain about his RR Track encounter from years ago.

Keith Walters @Zuffenhaus made this one. Bash proof stainless steel. He didn't think anything lighter would hold up. Rennline does make an aluminum one but I'm not entirely sure it would clear the tank.

My recollection is the 110L doesn't ride as low in the car. I had a photo of both side by side but presently cannot find it.

Gordon- That keen eye of yours doesn't miss much. Scott installed the second clamp before sending the car to me. I plan on sending Brett that photo.

My car also has a steel skid plate similar to the one in Tom's photo. Based on the scars and scratches it accumulates between touch up paint it has saved my tank from unknown damage.
