    Newbie taking the plunge...

I’ve been lurking on this site since around March and registered a few weeks ago. I’ve skimmed the 12,000 most recent posts in the General Info section and closely read many of them. That takes me all the way back to posts written in April 2008. I don’t know if I’ll make it through all of the remaining 5,000 posts (especially since there is the technical section, too, which I’ve barely penetrated), but it is good to know that this thriving community is out there.

Let me start by saying thanks to all of you that have shared your expertise, ideas, enthusiasm and gripes over the years. I don’t have much knowledge to share myself at this point (unless one cares to know about a newbie’s path into this corner of the world, which I share in a separate post), but hopefully that will change in the years ahead.

By reading your posts, I’ve learned about PPIs (and spent my first $600 “Porsche dollars” on one based on your guidance), sort of learned how to interpret compression and leak down test results, found a transport service (Intercity), figured out how to authenticate engine numbers, paint color, etc. (a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate was my second $500), and have begun developing a perspective on how to address the first issues when I receive the car (broken horn and 25 year old tires). I even found an early911sregistry member that lives in my town.

Along the way I enjoyed some epic threads, none better than the one related to VIN 300005.

Soon I will receive delivery of a really cool 1971 T Targa that I just bought. I live in the snow belt, so I plan to wait patiently for the salt to clear before hitting the road. Then the journey goes to the next stage. This first stage (car selection and procurement) has already been interesting. I’m optimistic (and reasonably confident) that you helped me make good choices to get started. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks again,

    Howard

All the reasons this board is here! Welcome to the club of addicted Porsche people, no cure, but plenty of medicine. Many of us are also waiting for Spring, and no salt.

Howard, welcome to the board! Love your new car. We are here to help. If you are in the snowbelt that must put you near the Great Lakes or should I say downwind of the great lakes. I'm in Cleveland. If you are close by and want to chat pop me an IM with your details. I've been down the slippery slope with six Porsches and have made many, many mistakes and can share with you my errors so you don't make them.
