    Bilstein Jack Disassembly?

I would like to disassemble my Bilstein jack for cleaning and restoration. From my reading on this, I assumed I could remove the top snap ring from the tube and simply jack the lifting components off the top. Apparently it is not that simple. I was able to jack the components to about 1 inch from the top but no further. Can anyone describe how to remove and reinstall the components after cleaning and painting/plating?

Let us all know when you'Ve been down that road, I will have to disasseble mine too but for a different reason: I'll replace the tube to make mine longer so I can jack the car higher.

Tom, they should normally lift off the top, but the parts might be rusted, damaged or distorted.
That's a Volkswagen jack, by the way.

Just remove the spring clip at the top and "jack" it up till it pops off. Very simple.

PS: Looks like a proper 70/71/72 jack to me.

OK, I didn't think so, but I'll defer to Jim's knowledge on that... :-)

Jim, did the 70-72 Porsche jacks have VW logos on them?

That's what I thought but it does not seem to want to jack all the way up. It stops jacking about an inch from the top. I'll try some rust dissolver and lube to see if I can get it jacked up.

Just a bit of steel wool will do it.
