Thread: SWB steel wheel original valve stem and wheel weight info

  1. #11
    Hi Chuck,

Thanks for sharing those pictures, very useful. I need to get of my ass and get some of those weights or have them made for my '56.

On the 911 weights, any other people who have an original spare with weights they can share pictures of?

That looks like the German weights I recall. (Worked in tires from '76-98.) I'd go this way if I were doing it.

the square shaped weights are what I am used to seeing from the period on Fuchs. I do not think they were ever applied to steel wheels. I too am interested in what clip on weights are period correct.

I have perhaps two dozen of these weights in various sizes. Not certain where they came from, but perhaps VW.

Just to follow-up on this. Ordered a set of the Pirelli's from Longstone. Hard decision as there is not really a true authentic tire out there for the SWB cars. As the XAS is listed as for 912 and the Vredensteins were not available in period I decided the Pirelli's would be the "best" choice. For tubes I will use the Michelin 15E's which seem to have a stem close to what Chuck posted in this thread.

Have not been able to find any hard conclusive evidence on the weights used so will probably settle from some of the Wurth weights. Will report back when everything is mounted and balanced.

What brand does your kardex mention?

I have this 7/65 wheel looks original tire?

I will check the weights (thought you had sorted it out by now )

    HI Richard,

    My kardex mentions Phoenix.

Have been slow getting this sorted out. Much time spent re-doing (as in doing all the grinding and polishing myelf) bad chrome (are there any decent chromers in the EU????), getting the upholstery figured out (perforation), machining the black and other mounting parts for the rear wiper set-up and getting the glass logo's sorted.

Bumping this thread. Finalizing some details on the tires. Those that have seen original spares, was the location on the tire the valve stem faced marked with one or two paint dots, typically red?

    Much appreciated
