"Corrosion or metal failure on the cam. Miles are low, so this isn't likely due to wear."

I remember authorizing the replacement of some S cams under warranty in 73 for premature wear in 75....Yours look like they took a while longer...

    Nice car and history BTW.

Small update. The motor is coming along and looking very nice. The gearbox has returned having been fully stripped down, serviced, and cleaned up.

Enjoying this thread immensely !! Brings back memories of my restoration. Wonderful that you kept the car in the family. Keep the pics coming.

At Steve Becker's advice, we made two small modifications to the engine. While I do want to preserve originality wherever possible, Steve felt these were no-brainers. The first is the Kremer mod, which improves oil pressure regulation by redirecting excess pressure to the inlet rather than to the crankcase. The second is slight enlargement of some of the holes in the oil sprayers. I debated leaving both things alone, but this is a living machine that needs to function well, so fixing these small engineering shortcomings felt right to me.

Next up is the body. The shop has cleaned everything as much as possible, but there's only so much they can do. But we aren't going to stop here. Now that we can see exactly what state everything is in, we're going to pull the rear suspension, hubs, backing plates, etc. - then pressure wash, bead blast, and respray. All the old hoses will be replaced as well.

The underbody is "clean" but it still has ancient undercoating on it. So obviously we are going to completely refinish it and get things looking brand new again.

I am following up to see if that's a possibility. One issue is that I live in the Pacific Northwest so it's unavoidable that this car will see rain. If the old finish can't protect the car, that will trump originality for me.

Your undercoat looks great. I’d just touch it up and repaint. That’s what I did and I drive in the rain too. The only way to truely protect the car is blast the whole thing and galvanize it followed by an epoxy primer. The most critical area are the wheel wells and there we went with blasting and fancy primer.
