    Tool restoration - Lug nut wrench

    Haven`t restored tools yet, but one of my LWB came with an untappered lug nut wrench, which I would like to replace.

    The single tappered end ones, that I have, are rusty or heavy used.

    How to restore them?

    The tampered one looks galvanized, the later one chromed.

    Could you strip the rust and replate it with zinc? I am replating a lot on my car now.

    Yes, that is the way to go, I replate tools all the time. Older rusted ones come out pretty nice

    So white zinc is the way to go?

    No , the lug wrench is a satin unpolished chrome not clear zinc . I had mine scanned with a spectrophotometer , nickel was an element not zinc .

    are they not they nickel plated?

    If they are nickel plated, are they copper plated first? That is a typical process; the triple chrome plate is first a copper layer to promote adhesion, then nickel for a bright finish, and finally chrome to protect the nickel from tarnishing. Some of my special 914 alloy wheel bolts are copper plated then cadmium plated, so copper is often an underlying layer on steel.

    Let's not go overboard even though we're talking Porsche, these are tools after all. The most you could hope for would be a flash chrome coat.
